Wardrobe Building Blocks: The Essential Basics Every Closet Needs

Originally published February 2020 — refreshed 2026

A wardrobe, like a home, needs a sturdy foundation. Before you buy anything trend-driven or “special,” you need the building blocks: the foundation to your home. These are essential basics that let you create dozens of different looks out of a small, well fitted intiationall chosen set of clothing.

What counts as a building block?

Building blocks are neutral in colour — black, white, grey, brown, navy, and every shade in between. The neutral colour is decided on by your colour theory profile. Traditionally, a matching skirt and blouse or a tailored dress covered this category for women. Today, the building blocks list has expanded: They include: matching in textile and colour a blazer, trouser, skirt and dress combo (in preferred neautral),a white (or variant of white) blouse/tshirt tailored blouses, and — yes — a genuinely good pair of jeans. Skirts and dresses are not needed for a more masculine wardrobe.

A good pair of jeans is a building block is acurrent and modern addition to the list. As important as a blazer or a blouse. Invest the time to find the pair that’s right for your shape. If you’re shopping without me (not advisable), ask the retailer’s denim specialist — most stores train sales associates specifically in denim, and it’s worth using that expertise.

Why building blocks matter

With a handful of well-tailored, quality pieces, you can move through every landscape of your week — work to weekend, meeting to dinner — without starting from scratch each time. The trick is weaving them together:

  • A blazer over jeans for the weekend.
  • A full pant-suit ensemble for a big meeting or interview.
  • A white blouse/t-shirt (buy more than one) layered under a dress, or untucked with jeans for something casual.

Once your building blocks are in place, that’s when you get to add the fun stuff: a patterned silk blouse, a statement shoe, a bold blazer. Special pieces work because the foundation underneath them is solid.

Two rules before you buy

  1. Match every non-building-block purchase to at least three other pieces already in your closet. If it doesn’t earn its keep three times over, it’s not ready to come home with you.
  2. There are building blocks for every shape, size, and budget. Spend where it counts, and invest in a good tailor — it will do more for how clothing fits and reads than almost any single purchase.

Not sure what building blocks are missing from your closet? If you have them are they outdated (10+ years old)? That’s exactly what a Wardrobe Edit is for — I’ll go through what you have, tell you what’s actually working, and build your “what to buy” list and suggest solutions.
