Oversized aviators with tinted lenses are the sunglasses trend of the summer — and the most universally flattering shape I’ve styled in 20 years. Here’s why you don’t need to spend $500 to wear it, plus where to shop it.
Every June, a client asks me the same question: do I need to spend $400 or $500 on sunglasses to look put together? This summer, for the first time in a while, my honest answer is no.
What’s actually trending
Oversized frames are back in a big way, and aviators are leading the charge — bigger lenses, thicker acetate or metal, and a presence that doesn’t apologize for itself. The other half of the trend is lens colour. Grey and brown are taking a back seat to tinted lenses in soft yellow, amber, blue, and rose. It’s the kind of detail that reads as expensive without trying hard.
Why this shape works on everyone
Here’s the part that’s genuinely useful, not just trendy: an oversized aviator is one of the only sunglass shapes I recommend without asking what face shape I’m working with first. The teardrop lens elongates, the size covers more of the face evenly, and it doesn’t fight round, square, heart, or oval faces the way a small cat-eye or geometric frame can. It’s the closest thing to a universal win in eyewear — which is exactly why I keep recommending it to clients who don’t want to think about it twice.
The $500 problem
The designer versions of this exact silhouette — think Miu Miu, Celine, Prada — are running $400 to $600 a pair. The shape and the tint are the trend, not the logo.
